New Book: Old Salem and Salem College

Within a mile from the center of Winston-Salem, the twenty-first century gives way to an earlier time in the historic district called Old Salem.   Cross-timbered houses, costumed interpreters, historic and interactive museums, and period-accurate gardens show and tell the story of the Moravian town of Salem, established in 1766.  Old Salem is also the home of Salem Academy and College, begun in 1772 as a school to educate Moravian girls, and in continuous operation since its founding.  Step back in time and view Salem before and after its transformation to a living history museum, and experience the Moravian way of life in Piedmont North Carolina.

Edison Visits Winston-Salem

August 29, 1918 was a great day to be in downtown Winston-Salem. There was no forewarning, no advance notice that this would be a red-letter day in Winston-Salem history. You just had to be there.

EdisonIn 1918 Winston-Salem led North Carolina cities in many categories – largest manufacturing city overall and in particular for knit goods, flat plug tobacco, wagons and furniture. Winston-Salem led all North Carolina cities in population increase and boasted the largest weekly payroll between Richmond and Atlanta. Two daily newspapers served this thoroughly modern city, and three railway systems were centered here. With 37 million dollars invested in factories, there were also five banks to make loans and provide competition. With an abundant water supply, 200 miles of permanently improved roads in Forsyth County, streets lighted by electric lamps, and modern sewerage and drainage systems, Winston-Salem was second to none.

New Book: Winston-Salem: Then & Now

Winston-Salem has experienced many changes since the towns of Winston and Salem were legally joined in 1913 to become one city. The changes have come gradually, and are not always evident until the recent is compared to the past. Winston-Salem: Then & Now pairs a historical photograph of Winston-Salem with a current photograph of the same location or building, accompanied by a caption that elaborates on the changes that have occurred over the years. The book shows street scenes, public buildings, houses, businesses, restaurants, and recreational areas in downtown Winston-Salem and along Reynolda and Stratford Roads. Can you imagine cows grazing in a pasture across from Hanes Mall, or streetcars on West Fourth Street, or signs along South Main Street advertising 28-cents a gallon gasoline? Take a ride down memory lane and see what’s been happening in Winston-Salem – Then and Now!

On Sale: September 22, 2008!
